The Federal Reserve's first rate cut since December arrived in the middle of September 2025. For furniture stores that rely on financing, cheaper money was welcome news, though the cut was small.
The short version
- The Fed lowered its target range by a quarter point to 4 to 4.25 percent.
- Census showed furniture store sales up 5.2% from a year earlier in August.
- CPSC warned consumers to stop using Cranach plastic tip restraint kits.
- Brand House's first Bed Bath & Beyond Home store beat its expectations.
A first rate cut
The Federal Open Market Committee lowered the federal funds target range by 1/4 percentage point, to 4 to 4-1/4 percent, citing higher risks to employment. Financing rates for furniture purchases follow the broader rate environment, so a cut gives retailers a bit more room on promotional offers.
Furniture sales hold up
The Census Bureau's advance estimate put August sales at furniture and home furnishings stores down 0.3% from July and up 5.2% from a year earlier. Monthly numbers bounce around, but the year-over-year trend was still positive.
Tip restraint warning
CPSC warned consumers to stop using Cranach Hardware plastic tip restraint kits sold on Amazon, citing at least 115 reports of the kits breaking, including six tip-overs. Retailers that hand out or install anti-tip kits should know which brand they use.
Update. Cranach Hardware recalled the kits in October 2025 and offered a free replacement.
Bed Bath & Beyond Home
The Brand House Collective, formerly Kirkland's, said its first Bed Bath & Beyond Home store in Nashville drew demand that exceeded its expectations, and it planned to convert more stores to the format.
Cheaper money, cautiously
A quarter point cut would not change shopping habits overnight. It did make financing offers a little easier to fund, and sales were still growing from a year earlier.
