Late July 2025 brought a slightly better read on consumers and a run of earnings that showed how much strategy mattered. Same market, very different results.
The short version
- The Conference Board's confidence index rose to 97.2 in July.
- Beyond, Inc. reported second-quarter revenue of $282 million and a shift toward growth.
- Sleep Number's net sales fell 19.7%.
- Purple reaffirmed its 2025 guidance.
Confidence, with an asterisk
The Conference Board's index rose 2.0 points to 97.2 in July, but its expectations index stood at 74.4, still below the level of 80 that has historically signaled a recession ahead. Consumers felt steadier about the present than about the months ahead.
For furniture, that meant shoppers who were willing to buy but in no hurry.
Beyond plays offense
Beyond, Inc., the owner of the Bed Bath & Beyond and Overstock brands, reported second-quarter revenue of $282 million, up from the first quarter, with a much smaller loss than a year earlier. The company said it was moving from stabilizing the business toward growth, including the first Bed Bath & Beyond Home store.
Two mattress stories
Sleep Number reported second-quarter net sales of $328 million, down 19.7%, on lower volume and fewer stores, as its turnaround continued.
Purple's revenue fell 12.6% to $105.1 million, but the company reaffirmed its full-year guidance and pointed to strong demand for its new Rejuvenate line and its Mattress Firm rollout.
Strategy over conditions
Confidence was stable but cautious. The companies with a clear plan for reaching customers were holding up better than those still rebuilding.
